Steaming Ahead: Aln Valley Railway....

One of the glories of being British (and English) is the inveterate enthusiasm for some of its inhabitants for voluntarily running otherwise defunct branch-lines and restoring old steam trains.

One such adventurous band of brothers/sisters/siblings is the ‘Aln Valley Railway’ project, just up the road from Newcastle, which is aiming to re-link Alnmouth and Alnwick by rail.

- or at least as far as possible given the inconsiderate nature of the person who decided to build the A1 across the original line…

And not to mention the mild inconvenience of a large second-hand bookshop being opened in the original station in Alnwick!

Anyway, it is encouraging such projects of this nature should be at least partially helped by the ‘EU’ and ‘Defra’, although, with a little more funding and imagination it would surely have been possible to build a bridge or a tunnel under the A1 and thus make this railway even more viable in the longer term…
